Haiti Assessment Team Video

I got this video from Rev. Glenn Merritt's blog Master of Disaster. It is a short video of photos and images from January 22 - 23, 2010 with "How Great Thou Art" sung in Creole by a group of Lutherans in Jacmel, Haiti, as background music. You can read all about "How Great Thou Art" in Wikipedia. The damage 28 seconds of an earthquake certainly shows the "power" of God, but in that awesome power destruction is wrought. Brings to mind Elijah in 1 Kings 19:11, the mountain was torn apart but "the Lord was not in the earthquake." That is to say, the Lord was not found in a gracious way in the earthquake. Stanza 3 of "How Great Thou Art" mentions Christ on the cross, for this is where we find a gracious and merciful God.

How Great Thou Art (From Wikipedia)

  • Verse 1:
O Lord my God! When I in awesome wonder
Consider all the works Thy hands have made.
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.
Refrain:
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
  • Verse 2:
When through the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze:
(Repeat Refrain.)
  • Verse 3:
And when I think that God, His Son not sparing,
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin:
(Repeat Refrain.)
  • Verse 4:
When Christ shall come with shouts of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration,
And there proclaim, my God, how great Thou art!
(Repeat Refrain.)
