Rev. Matthew Harrison Speaking on his book, "A Little Book on Joy."
At the Lutheran Laymen's League banquet in Columbus, IN, Rev. Matthew Harrison also spoke about his book, "A Little Book on Joy." The original context of his clip came after he described Wyneken's struggle with depression. The Lord works through weakness. Wyneken, perhaps the greatest missionary pastor in the history of the Missouri Synod, struggled with depression. In Wyneken's weakness, the Lord used him. In weakness the Lord shows himself strong. In our weakness, the Lord works and shows his strength. The gospel sets us free and gives us joy in the midst of our struggles in life. Rev. Harrison closes with the story of the death of Lazarus, Jesus' words, "Lazarus died and I rejoice." It seems like an odd quote. In weakness and trial and death, the Lord shows his strength. Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, just as Holy Week begins. Jesus goes to the cross and shows the Lord's strength in his death; on the cross Jesus shows that there is he most our Savior. In Jesus there is joy.
